McBean
VERSION 3.0
RELEASED MAY 2017
SIXTEEN STYLES
DESIGNED BY BENJAMIN WOODLOCK

The McBean family is the result of a commission from California Institute of the Arts to create a multi-style typeface as an extension to the school’s identity. CalArts is a community formed by Walt Disney that has become an incubator for conceptual makers — the Burtonesque freaks on the hill of the Santa Clarita Valley. The design program has a rich history of type design, ranging from the quirky to the bizarre, which inspired the development of an eclectic voice in line with the school’s spirit. Inspired by a logo created by Scott Taylor, McBean includes an OpenType “switchcase” which features an alternate capital A and E.
